First version of my Sci-fi painting, "The Journey Begins" i just changed the title of the piece, feel it fits better this way. I found one of my old black and white concept i painted a while back, and decided to create a piece out of it, and that's how this one started. i'm quite pleased with how this turned out, as my focus is on lighting and creating something vast with sense of scale in it.
oh and.. compositionally the ship is closer to the camera and it's not docked or aligned with the dock. sorry i couldn't make it as clear as i hoped. wasn't paying attention when i was designing the shot.
I'm working on a documented tutorial/process for this piece, it's going to be publish in my up coming artbook. i have to reserve the pictures right now, and hopefully put it up on my blog after the book is out. sorry i can share it sooner.
i have to get more prints in for Anime North this year, hope to see some of you there.
comments and critiques are welcome
*Edit Note: i went back trying to fix the perspective error on the nose of the ship. and realized some how my psd file has been totally damaged by my absolutely unprofessional use of the not so reliable storage device. a large portion of the pixels are unreadable.. good thing i saved highres Jpegs, so i worked from that. i've also readjusted the color balance a bit, so the bloom like effect isn't too over the top. some texture refinements made and thankfully to the almighty power of overlay, this process isn't at all too tedious.. so... Voila~
Holy Crap! That is amazing stuff. You just seem getting better and better at a really fast rate! Only comment is that the blur-surreal is good in the background but horrible up close. The up right shows that. That still deserves a WOW and a Fav!

This is amazing. The scale, the lighting (such a great understanding of your light source), and the construction of the small details have all really paid off.
I have a couple of questions: How is that ship docked? Is it even docked? The ship's engines are giving off a light glow like they're still going. Maybe some physical clamps or attachment to the ship with that cold steel outcropping. Something to more relate the dock to the ship. Really help define the moment. I feel like this is one of those details that the artist knows and sees it as a 'duh' moment to them, but isn't as defined to the audience.
Again; fantastic work, and I'd love to see you do more of these 18 hour pieces.
Another thought after seeing a good amount of your pieces; can we get a painting process video? Not just a black and white, but your process of taking a drawing and turning it into this. Your work is phenomenal and it has a lot to share to people.

great work man, really! the only thing i got to mention, is that the perspective on the ship's fore looks a bit off. it doesn't match the vanishing points of the background... if you simply transform the upper left corner of the ship, it should be better i think.

the ship is leaving the dock in the picture, i changed the title as it better suits the piece. there are some perspective distortions that's unintentional but hard to get so accurate relating to everything in the piece.
i am working on a few process works, and hopefully i'll be able to share some of it next month. the process for this piece however is reserved for an art book, i'm sorry about that. but for sure that there's gonna be alot more process work for share later, just have to wait a bit for it.

Love the angle the picture is viewed from.
if you do, which one.
